Our natural parklands are under attack! Urban sprawl and non-native invasive plants and animals transform globally-rare mediterranean ecosystem of the Santa Monica Mountains into a wasteland of weeds.
Mountains Restoration Trust has a solution to bring back the native plants. A unique program called “Students Helping Restore Unique Biomes” (SHRUB) combines environmental education, community service learning and getting kids back to nature. Now in its sixth month, SHRUB is a resounding success with teachers, 4th to 6th grade students and their parents. Many of these children are from the urban areas of Los Angeles and from families that don’t have opportunities to get out into the parks.
We need your help! MRT needs funds to continue the program next year, but budget cuts by school and transportation districts make that impossible for them to pay for it. With the new school year quickly approaching, MRT needs to raise $21,000 to bring 7 classes to Headwaters Corner. That’s $3,000 per class or $14/child per visit.
Please consider adopting a classroom to participate in this year-round program.
